The history of the company began on September 26, 1876, in the German city of Aachen, North. Rhine-Westphalia (Aachen, Nordrhein-Westfalen). It got its name from the creator - Fritz Henkel, who founded it, together with partners. The company's first product was a universal washing powder. For the first time in history, this product was not sold by weight, but in special packages. The company's products are rapidly gaining popularity. New varieties of powder are emerging. Already in 1879, they had to expand by building another factory. At the same time, the company is expanding its range of products. Glue, detergents, cosmetic products and even… tea appear. Representative offices also appear in different countries - Austria, England, Belgium, the Netherlands ... Various small companies involved in similar products are bought up and absorbed.
Trademark registration takes place in 1895 Henkel's Bleich Soda. The image of a lying lion becomes its logo. This bleach was at that time one of the most popular products of the company.
In 1907 Henkel presents one of its most famous brands - Persil. Washing powder was extremely successful and effective. He was easily able to push competitors' products on the market.
The year 1920 was marked by the appearance on the product packaging of a new company logo - a red oval with the inscription "Henkel" inside, as it has survived to this day.
During the Second World War Henkel does not stop production - the company's products were needed not only in peacetime. Among the employees of the company there are prisoners of war. Since 1944, its factories have been hit hard by Allied air raids. After the end of the war, the allies do not prohibit, but limit production. This state of affairs lasted until 1947.
The post-war history of the company is a history of growth and relentless research, the history of the emergence of new unique products and brands. In 1995, a very large and important purchase took place - the company was acquired Hans Schwarzkopf GmbH. Also at the end of the 90s of the last century, many other smaller companies operating in the field of household and industrial chemicals were taken over. This process continues into the early 21st century.
